Auto Insurance in Connecticut (CT)

Rates for auto insurance tend to be highest in urban areas with higher density of traffic. Connecticut, with its small size and large population, has some of the highest auto insurance premiums in the country. However, what you pay for insurance in Connecticut will also depend on your driving record, whether you drive your car to work every day, how many people in your household will be driving your vehicle, and many other factors.

How much auto insurnance do I need in Connecticut?

As is the law in most states, Connecticut requires drivers to carry minimum levels of auto insurance. State law mandates drivers carry two types of coverage: liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. The minimum requirements are as follows:

  • $20,000 per person for bodily injury liability and $40,000 of bodily injury liability per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage liability coverage
  • $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for uninsured/underinsured driver coverage

However, these are only the bare minimum requirements. In an accident, medical expenses and losses can easily surpass these amounts. Therefore, most insurers recommend increased amounts of coverage. How much coverage you should buy depends on your family’s financial assets and future earnings.

Can I get any auto insurance discounts in Connecticut?

If you are a driver who is 62 or older, you are entitled to at least a 5 percent discount for at least two years if you successfully complete a state-approved safe-driving course, regardless of your past driving record. Discounts may also be available to young drivers with good grades and drivers who hold other types of insurance policies with the same company, such as homeowner’s insurance.
