Auto Insurance in Alaska (AK)

More and more people are moving to Alaska, attracted by its dramatic, untouched natural landscape and flourishing wildlife. However,  extreme weather conditions, the high percentage of vehicles like trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles, and speeding drivers can all affect the auto insurance rates offered in the state.   In 2003, speed was determined to be a factor in 41 percent of the fatalities resulting from car accidents.

How much auto insurance do I need in Alaska?

Like most states, Alaska requires drivers to carry minimum levels of liability coverage. If you own a car in Alaska, you must carry a minimum of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per person and $100,000 per accident. You must also be insured for at least $25,000 for property damage liability. Keep in mind that these are only the minimums—you will probably want to buy more coverage to protect your vehicle and your family. However, residents in certain areas of the state that do not require vehicle registration are exempt from these mandatory insurance requirements. But having the adequate amount of coverage can save you a lot of money if you should ever be in an accident.

Under Alaskan state law, all insurance policies must offer drivers the option of excluding one driver in the household to qualify for a lower rate. So if you have a child who is away at school, you may wish to exclude him or her from your policy and pay less. However, you might still be liable should that individual be involved in an accident for which he or she is at fault.

Can I get a discount on my auto insurance?

Alaskan residents may qualify for discounts if their cars have low mileage or if they live in extremely rural areas. If you are the primary driver of a vehicle over the age of 55, Alaska requires insurers to offer a discount for at least three years if you complete a state-approved accident prevention course that has been approved by the state DMV.
